Rosemont Estate's 2013 Shiraz is a prime example of my thesis that wine can be complex, full-bodied, and delicious without breaking the bank.
I'm a huge fan of Australian reds, especially Cabernet and Shiraz. They tend to be sharp, tightly-packed bundles of flavor, and this wine from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales (just north of Sydney) is no exception.
Rosemont was founded in 1969 as a winery dedicated to "winemaking excellence, quality, innovation and style." In 1980, Rosemont's Chardonnay helped put Australian wines on the map by being the first wine from down under to win double gold at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 1980.
In recent years, Rosemont was bought out by Treasury Wine Estates, a large conglomeration of wineries, but if this bottle is any representation of what they offer, the acquisition hasn't hurt the quality of their wine at all.
Rosemont Estate 2013 Shiraz
Nose: Sharpness pairs well with English Cheddar. This is a rich wine, with a mild red berry hidden in the sharpness. There's something waiting to be discovered in the nose I just can't quite figure it out. This juicy berry fights to be heard.
Taste: Complex, with three distinct phases of flavor. It's dry; what a good red should taste like. Then the squeaky sweetness of fresh Concord grape skins. Occasionally, there's a hint of blue Stilton. It finishes with a nutty almond or pistachio.
